Info A cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus) perched on a black-eyed susan (Rudbeckia hirta). One of the largest wasps in North America, the females dig nests and hunt cicadas while the males fight each other for territory. For a few weeks in the summer, they can be quite a spectacle -- especially the males, giant wasps constantly fighting over patches of dirt.
